While you and your team may be returning from vacation, cybercriminals are relentlessly active. Research from ProofPoint and Check Point reveals a surge in phishing attacks during summer months. Discover how to stay vigilant and safeguard your business.
Why Are Summer Months Riskier?
Cyber attackers exploit your summer travel plans by impersonating popular hotel and Airbnb websites, according to Check Point Research. They report a 55% rise in new vacation-related website domains created in May 2025 versus last year. Out of over 39,000 domains registered, one in 21 is flagged as malicious or suspicious.
Additionally, the back-to-school season triggers an increase in phishing emails mimicking legitimate university communications targeting students and staff. Even if your business isn't directly affected, employees checking personal emails on work devices during this time can inadvertently expose your company's data with a single click.
How to Protect Your Team
Although AI enhances cybersecurity defenses, it also enables attackers to craft more convincing phishing messages. Training your team to recognize threats is critical to preventing breaches.
Essential safety measures include:
Watch for suspicious emails. Don't rely solely on spotting typos or poor grammar, as AI can generate polished messages. Carefully verify the sender's email address and inspect link text to ensure authenticity.
Verify URLs thoroughly. Look out for misspellings or unusual domain extensions like .today or .info, which often indicate fraudulent sites.
Access websites directly. Instead of clicking links in emails or messages, type website addresses yourself to avoid phishing traps.
Enable Multifactor Authentication (MFA). MFA adds an extra layer of security, protecting your accounts and sensitive data even if credentials are compromised.
Be cautious on public WiFi. When using public networks, always connect through a VPN to shield sensitive activities like bookings or banking.
Keep personal emails off work devices. Separating personal and business accounts reduces risk. Use personal devices for personal communications and reserve work devices for business tasks.
Consult your MSP about endpoint security. Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) tools monitor devices, block phishing attempts, and alert your MSP instantly if a breach occurs, minimizing data exposure.
Phishing tactics evolve rapidly, accelerated by AI advancements. The best defense is a well-informed team aware of emerging threats. Stay educated, stay protected!
